To
the parent with the 14-year-old who violated the family
rule about not going to Chat rooms online:
You are obviously a caring parent. I wonder, you say
this is a family rule. What do you normally do when she
breaks a family rule? The logical consequence in this
case would be to curtail her access to the computer. And
before you allow her back on, write a contract about
safe internet use and ask her to sign it. Using the
computer today takes good judgment, which she is in the
process of developing. In the meantime, she may test
limits and make mistakes (it’s part of the process). You
will need to monitor and guide her, which may also
include restricting her use of the computer unless she
makes wiser decisions in the future. Feel free to show
her my response and good luck.
